Department of Veterinary Surgery named after Academician I.O. Povazhenko
The Department of Surgery was established in 1923 as part of the Kyiv Veterinary Institute.
In 1993, the Department of Surgery was given its name in honor of its head in 1937–1977, Academician I.O. Povazhenko. In different years, the heads of the department were Professors V.I. Steletsky, K.I. Turkevych, S.I. Bratyukha, V.B. Borysevych. From 1999 to 2012, the head of the Department of Surgery named after Acad. I.O. Povazhenko was Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor O. Petrenko, from 2012 to 2015 - Candidate of Veterinary Sciences, Associate Professor V. Doroshchuk, from 2015 to 2016 - Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor V. Sukhonos. Since 2017, the head of the department has been Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor M.O. Malyuk.
Today, the scientific and pedagogical work of the department is carried out by: professors A. Y. Mazurkevych, M. O. Malyuk, associate professors M. A. Kulida, V. V. Tkachenko, Yu. O. Kharkevych, V. V. Klymchuk, T. L. Savchuk, senior lecturer D. V. Tarnavskyi, assistants V. V. Gonchar, I. M. Gorkava, D. O. Kovalenko, Yu. V. Paramonova. Members of the department have prepared and defended 15 doctoral and more than 50 candidate theses. The employees of the department have published more than 20 monographs, 22 textbooks, received more than 40 patents and copyright certificates for patents, and have also published more than 1,700 articles.
The departments are the Educational and Scientific Laboratories Animal Blood Bank, the Center for Cellular Technologies in Veterinary Medicine and Electrowelding of Biological Tissues, as well as the Museum of Surgery named after acad. I.O. Povazhenko. The department has student scientific circles "Veterinary Surgery" (head - Assoc. Prof. V. V. Klymchuk); "Animal Pathophysiology and Immunology" (head - Assoc. Prof. Yu.O. Kharkevich).
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department work on the development of methods of electric welding of biological tissues, modern methods of treating eye diseases, musculoskeletal system, application of nanotechnologies, use of blood products for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in regenerative therapy. New methods of obtaining and methods of using stem cells in veterinary medicine for therapeutic purposes have been proposed. The latest achievements in the treatment of animals for skin diseases, hearing organs and oncological diseases using cryogenic surgery are being implemented in practice.
The department closely cooperates with the Institute of Electric Welding named after E.O. Paton, the international association "Welding", the Department of Surgery of the Bila Tserkva State Agrarian University, the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine of the NAAS.
