NUBiP of Ukraine - Wageningen University & Research (WUR): prospects for cooperation and development

International communication plays a significant role in the implementation of interdisciplinary research. In particular, it is aimed at the development of science and education, boosting professional skills and abilities, establishing close cooperation ties and gaining experience in international activities. On September 30, 2022, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, International Activity and Development Vadym Tkachuk, Head of the ERC for International Activity Oleksander Labenko and Associate Professor of the Department of Agrosphere Ecology and Environmental Control Vita Strokal took part in the online webinar "Integrated land and water management in Ukraine", organized by one of the best universities in the field of life sciences, Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands).


The main goal of the webinar was to establish ties in the fields of scientific activity, in particular, interdisciplinary research on the integration of land and water quality in Ukraine, irrigation systems combined with innovative GIS technologies, studying current water problems and priorities for the development of agriculture in Ukraine in the conditions of war.

The opening speech was given by the Rector of WUR, Professor Dr. Arthur Mol and Vice President of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, Yuriy Lupenko. They voiced the prospects of future cooperation and outlined the main issues that science can solve for the stable and effective development of Ukraine.

 

 
Among webinar members were Attaché for agriculture of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kyiv Mr. Reinoud Nuijten, Manager of international relations in Central and Eastern Europe Dr. Vanya Simeonova, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine V.O. Holovnya, Head of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation M.V. Yatsyuk, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, International Activity and Development
Vadym Tkachuk, Head of Primavera international public organization Professor O.I. Zhovtonog.

 

 
In particular, Vadym Tkachuk, listed the results of cooperation between WUR and NUBiP of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of future cooperation in interdisciplinary research, noted that NUBiP of Ukraine has powerful scientific, material, technical and laboratory resources, highly qualified specialists in the relevant scientific areas of research, and stressed that the university is open to cooperation, both in scientific and educational spheres.

 

 
Scientists from various fields joined the discussions. In particular, scientists from WUR Hendrik Boogaard reported on the monitoring of crops and yields in the EU and Ukraine, Gerbert Roerink covered the issue of satellite mapping for irrigation efficiency, Maryna Strokal outlined main problems of water quality in the rivers of Ukraine; Tetyana Matyash, a scientist of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation of Ukraine, substantiated the main results in the development of an algorithm for forecasting of land irrigation. Participation in such events allows to reveal the opportunities for cooperation that will lead to joint scientific discoveries and have fruitful results.
