STUDENT SCIENTIFIC CLUB “MYCOLOGY”

Head of the Student Scientific Club: Olena Valentynivna Bashta
Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences

The Student Scientific Club “Mycology” of the Department of Phytopathology named after Academician V.F. Peresypkin was established in October 2019.

The Club is a voluntary scientific association of students established to organize and promote their research, development, and inventive activities.

In its activities, the Club is guided by the current legislation of Ukraine, the Statute of the University, and the Regulations on the Student Scientific Club.

The purpose of the Club’s activities is: to realize the scientific and creative potential of talented University students.

Students’ research is focused on addressing current issues related to the study of the structural and developmental characteristics of fungal pathogens causing plant diseases.

Within the Problem Research Laboratory of Mycology and Phytopathology, students have the opportunity to study the cultivation and identification of fungal organisms that cause plant diseases; isolate and identify fungal species from various ecological niches; and become familiar with methods for isolating and identifying biologically active substances produced by micromycetes that are important for protecting plants against harmful organisms.

The results of their research are presented and discussed at scientific seminars. Members of the Student Scientific Club also actively participate in scientific conferences at the University, national, and international levels.

Objectives of the Club:

  • To deepen students’ knowledge and skills in mycology (structural characteristics of fungal organisms), mycotoxicology (toxin production by fungal organisms), and fungal ecology (study of the mycobiota of various ecological niches);

  • To develop students’ practical skills in the isolation and identification of mycobiota from various ecological niches;

  • To study methods for isolating biologically active substances of fungal origin, including antibiotics, mycotoxins, vitamins, enzymes, growth stimulators, and growth inhibitors;

  • To familiarize students with methods for cultivating edible mushrooms;

  • To organize educational visits to leading research institutions specializing in the scientific fields relevant to the Club’s activities, including the D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, the Institute of Agroecology and Environmental Management of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, and the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;

  • To collect scientific material for the preparation of publications;

  • To prepare students for participation in scientific conferences;

  • To conduct scientific seminars based on research findings;

  • To hear and discuss reports on the activities of the Student Scientific Club, etc.
