Areas of Research
The Department of Ecobiotechnology and Biodiversity is actively engaged in research in the following contemporary fields:
1. Microclonal propagation of valuable cultivated, ornamental, fruit and berry, and medicinal plants:
-
development of in vitro propagation technologies for rare, commercially valuable, and medicinal plants;

production of planting material free from viral infections;
-
production of promising raw materials for the extraction of various biologically active substances.
2. Identification and control of the spread of the most common pathogens affecting cultivated plants:
-
screening of the most promising strains of microorganisms with natural antagonistic activity for controlling phytopathogenic bacteria;
-
use of biotechnological approaches to create plants resistant to plant pathogens (genetic engineering methods, marker-assisted selection).

3. Extraction of biologically active substances from plant-based raw materials:
- extraction of promising raw materials for the industrial production of medicinal substances based on callus and suspension cultures of medicinal plants;
- extraction and use of “bearded” root cultures for the accelerated synthesis of valuable pharmaceutical compounds.
4. Enhancing plant resistance to a wide range of abiotic and biotic stress factors using biotechnological methods:
-
the use of substances that induce resistance and activate the plants’ own defense mechanisms (for example, nitric oxide donors).
The department’s research is conducted in collaboration with: the Educational and Research Institute of Forestry and Landscape Architecture at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, the Academician Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the State Institution “Institute of Food Biotechnology and Genomics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.”
