Department of Foreign Philology and Translation
Established in 1973, the Department has undergone several structural transformations, reflecting the development of foreign language education at the University. Since 2023, it has united the academic traditions of Romance and Germanic Languages and Translation within a single academic unit.
Today, the Department is headed by Professor S. M. Amelina, a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences (Dr. habil.). The academic staff includes five professors (Dr. habil.), eleven associate professors holding PhD degrees, ten senior lecturers, and three assistant lecturers. Their research interests cover a wide range of fields, including lexicology, lexicography, philosophy of language, foreign language teaching methodology, literary theory, stylistics, sociolinguistics, translation theory, and related disciplines. The Department is actively involved in grant-funded research projects aimed at developing academic and methodological resources.
The educational activity of the Department focuses on training highly qualified philologists at the first (Bachelor’s) and second (Master’s) levels of higher education. Training is provided within the educational and professional programs “English Philology with a Second Foreign Language” and “German Philology with a Second Foreign Language.” The goal of each program is to provide comprehensive training for competitive specialists in the field of Germanic philology and translation.
Graduates of the Department have a wide range of employment opportunities—from traditional teaching to high-tech industries. The positions they hold include translator and interpreter, specialist in website and mobile application localization for foreign markets, copywriter or SMM manager, teacher, as well as specialist in various governmental and international organizations.
